TL;DR – How to skip the lines at St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica is free to enter, but the airport-style security line can stretch 60–90 minutes during peak hours (especially mornings and around papal events). With the 2025 Jubilee expected to bring millions of extra pilgrims, waits will be even longer. You can’t avoid security, but you can shorten the wait with these options:

  • Book Basilica reservation (From €6) : Reserve a timed slot and get a digital audio guide + map covering 27 highlights. Doesn’t skip security, but reduces the entry queue. Opt for early morning slots (7am), or late afternoon and avoid busy periods like Wednesdays when Papal Audience takes place.
  • Reserved entry with Dome access (From €24) : Skip the exterior ticket queue and climb 551 steps (or take the elevator partway) to Rome’s highest viewpoint. Includes papal tombs and audio guide. Best for panoramic views.
  • Guided tour with reserved entry (From €15) : Join a licensed guide to explore Michelangelo’s Pietà, Bernini’s Baldachin, and the papal tombs. Reserved entry shortens wait times, and you can add dome access by elevator. Best for storytelling and context.
  • Vatican Museums + Basilica combo: The only way to bypass the outdoor line completely. After touring the Museums and Sistine Chapel, you enter the basilica directly through a special passage. Best if you’re visiting both sites.

Absolutely fantastic experience on the Vatican tour. The instructions for the meeting point are super easy to follow and once you're there the tour reps and really helpful and well organised. The tour was awesome thanks to the tour guide, she was really knowledgeable and again very friendly and understanding about slow moving members of the group. The other plus was we got to access parts of the Vatican that were closed off at the time of the tour. Would highly recommend using, I definitely will. MASSIVE THUMBS UP 👍

We spent too much time outside the museum, and inside we hurried past the exhibits, our guide Olga speaking in a low voice and too quickly, as if she were talking to herself. There was no way we were even going through the art gallery, but only through part of the wing with sculptures and those quickly and unintelligibly explained. We spent a lot of time in line and the visit time was not extended by this interval.

From the company that took us to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel was excellent, very attentive Mr., he wrote me days ago to tell me the meeting place and the same day he called me (Vivicos International Travel), to the guide inside the Vatican very prepared. I recommend it a thousand times, it is a place you can not miss if you are in Rome.

Top-notch guide ... full of humor and very good explanations ... small downside: the title says "guided tour of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel with St. Peter's Basilica" for the Basilica it's totally autonomous ... explanations inside would have been appreciated ... too bad

Exceptionally well guided, informative and exciting. The museum and the Sistine Chapel always amaze you (the beauty, the impressive works, ...) and finally the walk through the Holy Door - a goosebump moment.

Calm and relaxed tour through the crowds and despite a few technical glitches that were due to the organization at the Vatican. Competent information on the history of art and religion and also on the practicalities of the visit

Book St. Peter's Basilica skip the line tickets

Skip the long ticket lines and enter the basilica shortly after a fast security check. These timed-entry tickets help you save precious hours during peak times—so you can spend more time marveling at Michelangelo’s Pietà and the grandeur of the dome, not waiting in queues.

What does skip-the-line really mean for St. Peter’s Basilica?

Skip-the-line access at St. Peter’s Basilica means you bypass the general entry queue—but not the mandatory security screening. You’ll enter through a dedicated line, avoiding the hour-long wait at the square.

Even better? Some guided tours unlock direct access from the Sistine Chapel inside the Vatican Museums, using a special corridor that leads straight into the Basilica. This lets you bypass the square entirely—no waiting outside, no second queue. You’re already inside, so you walk right in.

How long are the queues at the St. Peter’s Basilica entrance?

St. Peter’s Basilica is the most visited church in the world, welcoming up to 50,000 visitors a day. From April to October, general lines outside the basilica can stretch 60–120 minutes, especially between 9 AM and 1 PM. Even in the quieter months, you can face a 30–45 minute wait if you arrive late in the morning.

Lines start forming before opening time and often wrap around St. Peter’s Square, leaving many visitors stuck in the sun, especially in summer. Skip-the-line tickets help you bypass that snaking queue and get inside faster.

Types of queues at St. Peter's Basilica

At St. Peter’s Basilica, there are 3 main queues that you might encounter, depending on what you want to see or do. Regardless of the queue you're part of, the security check is a mandatory procedure before entry.

Frequently asked questions about St. Peter's Basilica skip-the-line tickets

Why book skip-the-line tickets for St. Peter’s Basilica?

They save you 1–2 hours of waiting during peak times, guarantee your entry time, and let you bypass the long ticket queues—sometimes through a dedicated entrance. You can also choose options with guided tours for added context.

What happens if I don't book skip-the-line tickets?

Without them, you could spend 1.5–2.5 hours inching forward under the hot sun, only to miss your ideal visiting time. You might end up hurrying through the Basilica to catch up—or worse, find the line cut off before you make it inside.

Do I still need to go through security?

Yes. Everyone passes through airport-style security, even with skip-the-line tickets—the difference is you’ll reach it much faster.

Can I get skip-the-line tickets at the gate?

It’s unlikely. These tickets are limited and usually sell out online several days in advance, so booking ahead is your safest bet.

Can I enter the attraction at any time with a skip-the-line ticket?

No, most skip-the-line tickets for St. Peter's Basilica are for a specific, pre-booked time slot. You must arrive at the designated time to use your reserved entry.

Why do skip-the-line tickets cost more?

The "skip-the-line" ticket is not for entry to the Basilica itself, which is free. The fee is for the convenience and services provided, such as:

  • A pre-booked time slot that allows you to bypass the long general queue.
  • Access to a dedicated entrance for ticket holders.
  • Additional services like a guided tour, an audio guide, or access to the Dome.
